The verbs are presented in the following order: imperfective (conjugation pattern) / perfective (conjugation pattern).

Starting and stopping the action

• zaczynać (-am, -asz) / zacząć (-cznę, -czniesz) - to begin, to start + verb / noun
  Zaczynasz tracić nadzieję? Are you starting to lose hope?
  
  
• rozpoczynać (-am, -asz) / rozpocząć (-cznę, -czniesz) - to start + noun (process, activity, event), more formal and solemn than zaczynać
  Zwykle rozpoczynamy wycieczkę wcześnie rano, ale tę rozpoczniemy o 12:00. We usually start our tour early in the morning, but this one will start at 12:00.
  
  
• przestawać (-staję, -stajesz) / przestać (-stanę, -staniesz) - to stop, to cease + verb
  To arcydzieło nie przestaje mnie fascynować. This masterpiece never ceases to fascinate me.
  
  
• zatrzymywać (-muję, -mujesz) / zatrzymać (-am, -asz) - to stop, to halt, to retain + noun
  Dzięki interwencji udało się zatrzymać ten proceder. Thanks to the intervention, [we] managed to stop this immoral practice.
  
  
• kończyć (-ę, -ysz) / skończyć (-ę, -ysz) - to finish, to complete + verb / noun; (się) - to end
  Właśnie kończę kawę. I'm just finishing my coffee.
  
  

The above verbs, which can be combined with nouns - so, apart from przestawać / przestać - also appear in the reflexive form, i.e. directed at the subject itself:

• Impreza zaczyna się o siódmej wieczorem. The party starts at 7 PM.
• Rozpoczął się rok akademicki w wyższych szkołach artystycznych. The academic year has begun at art schools.
• Przed wejściem na ulicę należy się zatrzymać i obserwować ruch samochodów. Before entering the street, one must stop [one should "stop oneself"] and observe traffic.
• Chcę dojechać do domu zanim skończy mi się benzyna. I want to get home before I run out of gas ["before the gas ends"].

Continuity or change of state

• trwać (-am, -asz) - to last
• kontynuować (-nuuję, -nuujesz) - to continue + noun
• utrzymywać (-muję, -mujesz) / utrzymać (-am, -asz) - to maintain, to keep + noun
• zachowywać (-wuję, -wujesz) / zachować (-am, -asz) - to preserve, to keep + noun
• zostawać (-staję, -stajesz) / zostać (-stanę, -staniesz) - to stay, to remain; to become (!)
• pozostawać (-staję, -stajesz) / pozostać (-stanę, -staniesz) - to stay, to remain (only)
• stawać się (-staję, -stajesz) / stać się (-stanę, -staniesz) - to become (only)
